Default Thinking of Spain

I am thinking of taking my caravan to Spain, but I have heard several comments that are putting me off. The first is being gassed and robbed the second is how far to travel before I take a break or overnight stay. I would be travelling from the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, Ferrying from Dover to Calais and then travelling down through France to Estatrtit Spain. I would be very gratefull if anyone could give me as much info as poss. ie toll roads, best route, overnight stops, places to avoid. I will be travelling along with my wife, 16 year old daughter and her 16 year old friend. I envisage quite a few toilet breaks with 3 women on board so please advise of approx journey time and overall cost of travel.

Default travelling to spain

weve been to spain and france many times its 760 miles from calais to estartit take the route towards paris once through paris its a straight run in fact one road runs for 377 miles weve stayed overnight on the aires on the autoroutes in the past but you do hear various storys about thefts,if you do stay on the aires always park next to other vans (safety in numbers) and where its well lit,but for piece of mind stay on a proper campsite. one of the best campsites around estartit is el delfin verde its very large but the facilitys are superb

Our normal trip is lunchtime leave Glasgow, 2300 ferry at Dover, maybe 0700 Paris (follow Bordeaux signs), stop for 2 hours kip at Saran Services just north of Orleans. Always park in with the trucks. Then 3 hours down to just north of Clermont Ferrand for overnight at Camping Filature at Ebreiul. A v welcoming site. Next day 7 hours to Estartit over Millau viaduct. Always a treat.

Have just returned from Spain. I used www.michelin.com to plan my journey - several options available, eg michelin recommended, economic etc. Their estimate of toll charges is slightly off; 140 euros each way is what I experienced and fuel is about the same price as the UK in both France and Spain. Also I used a michelin map (No726) Route Planning France 2011 which gives a broad picture of France on one sheet. Thinking of using the ferry to Santander next year in view of the Toll/Fuel costs totalling about £600 and a further £20+ for each night we pitched in France. Also, the sites in France we used were inferior to the sites we used in Spain.
