When I go down that way, often continuing down to Rome, Sorrento and then Sicily, I would go through Belgium to Luxembourg then via Metz, Strasbourg, Basel, Luzern, St Gotthard Tunnel, Milan and Bologna to Florence.

If you are going to the Tuscan coast then turn off at Parma and head for La Spezia then Pisa.

You need a Vignette to go through Switzerland if you have a car or motorhome under 3500kg, if you are towing a caravan then you have to buy a Vignette for that as well. It is not expensive and lasts from December of one year through to January of the year after next. You can buy at the border or buy it online before you go.

Phil.
